Focus for 2008

Old Cove Road Old Cove Road
Approximately 13 tons of sediment are deposited into Cove Brook per year due to this site. During every rain event the gravel from the upper part of the road flows down the road, creating fluvial ditching in the middle of the road. In summer 2008 we will have the road crowned and graded and the Town will pave and install a curb to direct runoff appropriately.
Meadow Road Culvertculvert
Approximately 17 tons of gravel per year are deposited into the brook at this site. The culvert is undersized based on erosion and occasional washout of the entire pipe. In summer 2008 we will replace the culvert with an open arch design. Upon completion, the road crossing channel should mimic tehe rest of the brook, presenting no more of a challenge to movement of organisms than the natural channel due to the use of the innovative open arch (fish and wildlife friendly) design.

Cove Brook NPS Pollution Control Project
We are working with multiple partners including the Town of Winterport, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Waldo County Soil and Water Conservation District, Projec SHARE, US Fish & Wildlife Service and others to control 93% of the NPS in Cove Brook!!

Purpose

The purpose of this project is to protect water quality and habitat for the federally Endangered Species, Atlantic salmon, and their ecosystem. This project will address priority actions for recovery of this genetically distinct population segment of Atlantic salmon.  These actions are highlighted in the 2006 Status Review for Anadromous Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) in the United States; the 2005 Recovery Plan for the Gulf of Maine Distinct Population Segment of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar); and the 2003 Cove Brook Watershed Management Plan.

The proposed project will implement BMPs for the four highest priority NPS sites, eliminating 174 tons of sedimentation to the brook annually. The Cove Brook watershed, while relatively small in size, has national distinction. The small size of the watershed makes mitigation of the majority of NPS problems possible. The project will increase collaboration with local municipalities and involve community members. This will increase the transfer of BMPs and general awareness of NPS issues in the community.

Funding for this project, in part, was provided by the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act.  Section 319 grants are administered by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection in partnership with EPA
