Cove Brook Watershed Council All Rights Reserved What is Cove Brook?
Cove Brook is located on the northern edge of Waldo
County, Maine, with one small tributary, Baker Brook,
originating in southern Penobscot County. The National
Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service (USFWS) listed the Atlantic salmon
population in Cove Brook as endangered on November 13,
2000. It is the smallest in size of the eight listed
salmon rivers in Maine. The brook is a tributary of
the Penobscot River estuary, located approximately 13
miles below the Veazie Dam (head of tide). It flows
about 10 miles from its headwaters and drains a watershed
of 9.5 square miles in the towns of Winterport and Hampden.
Why the Cove Brook Watershed Council Was Formed
At the time of the salmon listing, Cove Brook was the only salmon watershed without a watershed council. In response to the listing and to threats to the watershed by land use and development, a group of landowners, local citizens, and members of state and federal natural resource agencies formed the Cove Brook Watershed Council (CBWC) in March of 2001. The council, which received 501(c) 3 tax exempt status from the IRS in February 2001, is a grassroots organization with about 12 to 15 members who meet monthly at the Winterport Recreation Building. Since its formation, the council has been involved in many activities (HOT LINK) to protect the brook and educate the public about its resources.
